Energy Efficiency Minor

The Energy Efficiency Minor prepares students to understand and apply strategies that improve the efficient use of energy across buildings, transportation, and industrial systems. This minor addresses the growing demand for professionals trained in clean and sustainable energy technologies and supports students interested in careers related to energy science, engineering, policy, planning, economics, and management.

Clean and green energy technologies are among the fastest-growing sectors globally, and this minor is designed to be accessible to students from diverse academic backgrounds, not limited to engineering majors.

Refer to the UC Davis General Catalog – Energy Efficiency Minor for official minor details and requirements.

  • Minor Requirements
  • Coursework: All courses must be taken for a letter grade.

Minimum grades: A grade of C- or better is required for all courses used to satisfy minor requirements.

GPA requirement: A minimum 2.000 GPA in the required minor coursework is required.

Course overlap: Only one course may count toward both your major and the minor.

  • Important Planning Notes
  • Students are responsible for meeting all course prerequisites, which may vary by department—plan carefully.

Because minor courses may be offered by multiple departments, early planning and advisor consultation is strongly recommended.

Schedule a final advising appointment at least two quarters before graduation to confirm all minor requirements will be completed.

An approved minor declaration does not guarantee awarding the minor. All required coursework must be completed and verified by an advisor before graduation.

  • How to Declare the Minor
  • Submit the Energy Efficiency Minor Petition in OASIS before starting the minor to ensure all requirements are met.

List all planned courses for the minor.

Identify any overlapping courses with your major(s) or other minor(s) in the comment box.

Save your petition as a draft and meet with the Minor Advisor before submitting.

To schedule an appointment, email [email protected].

GIS Minor – Geographic Information Systems

The Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering offers a minor in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) with an emphasis on spatial analysis. This minor is designed for students interested in working with spatial data across a wide variety of applications, including:

  • Remote sensing and environmental modeling
  • Land information systems and precision agriculture
  • Thematic mapping and surface modeling
  • Marine cartography and public utility planning
  • Emergency response, geo-marketing, geotechnics, archaeology, military exercises
  • Computer-aided design

Refer to the UC Davis General Catalog - GIS Minor for official minor details and requirements.

  • Prerequisites
  • To declare the GIS minor, students must have completed:

    Mathematics: 16A-16B

Statistics or equivalent: Statistics 13, Plant Sciences 120, or Civil & Environmental Engineering 114

Foundational course: Plant Sciences 21 or Computer Science & Engineering 15

  • Minor Requirements
  • Core courses: All core courses must be taken for a letter grade.

Electives: One elective may be taken Pass/No Pass (P/NP).

Course overlap: Only one course may count toward both your major and minor.

  • Important Scheduling Notes
  • ESM 186, ABT 181N, and ABT 182 are offered only in winter.

ABT 181N and ABT 182 alternate yearly, so careful planning is required.

Students often face conflicts between minor and major courses due to these constraints. Early planning and consultation with a Minor Advisor is essential.

Schedule a final advising appointment at least two quarters before graduation to confirm all minor requirements will be completed.

  • Steps to Declare & Complete the Minor
  • Meet with a Minor Advisor

Email [email protected] to schedule an appointment.

Advisors will help ensure you are on track to complete the minor and meet graduation requirements.

    Submit a GIS Minor Petition

List all courses you plan to take for the minor.

Indicate any course overlaps with your major or other minors.

    Finalize Declaration

Submit the petition after advisor approval.

An approved minor declaration does not guarantee awarding of the minor—completion of all coursework must be verified by your advisor.

Precision Agriculture Minor

The Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering offers a minor in Precision Agriculture, a cutting-edge approach to optimize fertilizer, pesticide, and water use while minimizing environmental impacts. This minor equips students with the skills and knowledge to apply site-specific crop management techniques using modern technologies and data-driven decision-making. Applications include:

  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  • Global Positioning Systems (GPS)
  • Variable Rate Technologies (VRT)
  • Crop and soil sensors
  • Remote sensing
