New BAE faculty wins Sunkist Young Designer Award

Assistant Cooperative Extension Specialist Alireza Pourreza was selected to receive the Sunkist Young Designer Award that will be presented during the ASABE Annual meeting in Detroit in July.

Established in 1972, this award recognizes and honors members under 40 years of age (on July 1 of the year in which the award is presented), for outstanding contributions to the advancement of the profession and to stimulate professional achievement.

BAE researchers awarded $790,000 from Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research

Congratulations to CE Specialist Dr. Irwin Donis-Gonzalez and Adjunct Professor Dr. Kurt Kornbluth, who are both on the team that was awarded a $790,000 Seeding Solutions grant from the Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research (FFAR), a nonprofit established in the 2014 Farm Bill with bipartisan congressional support.  The team is tasked with revolutionizing the food processing industry -- they will test new technology to improve the drying methods used in food production.

Dr. Zhongli Pan receives Chinese Government Friendship Award

Dr. Zhongli Pan received Chinese Government Friendship Award at a grand Award Ceremony held on September 29th, 2017 in the Great Hall of the People, Beijing. The award was conferred by Vice Premier Ma Kai.

Dr. Pan was nominated by Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology for this award. He was recognized for his outstanding leadership and contributions toward international collaboration in research and education in food and agriculture.

Grad student invited to participate in Professors for the Future program

Congratulations to BAE grad student Lauren Jabusch, who was selected to participate in the UC Davis Graduate Studies 2017-2018 Professors for the Future program.  Her selection was based on a number of factors such as academic performance, leadership potential, the desire to serve the needs of your fellow students and interest in participating in the graduate and postdoctoral education process.

BAE at the Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Field Day

Every year in early March, the Biological & Agricultural Engineering (BAE) department partners with the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CA&ES) to hold three contests for the annual Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Field Day. Field Day acts as a showcase for both the BAE Department and the CA&ES because it is open to FFA and 4-H high school students from California and surrounding states.

ASABE, SOBE, and BAE-GSA visit the California Agriculture Museum

On Saturday February 25th, three student clubs of the BAE Department: the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers Student Chapter (ASABE), the Society of Biological Engineers (SOBE), and the Biological and Agricultural Engineering Graduate Student Association (BAE-GSA) teamed up to attend a tour of the California Agriculture Museum in Woodland, CA.

BAE grad student wins 2nd in regional ASABE poster competition

Congratulations to Erin Kizer, graduate student in the Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering, who won the second place poster award and a cash prize in the graduate student category poster competition at the ASABE California-Nevada Section meeting in Tulare, CA, on 15 February 2017!

Her winning poster is “Leaf Monitoring System for Continuous Measurement of Plant Water Status to Assist with Irrigation Management of Specialty Crops”.

Prof. Emeritus Bill Chancellor recognized

Professor Emeritus William J. Chancellor of the Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering was presented with a Certificate of Recognition at the inaugural precision agriculture seminar on January 26.  The award was presented for Prof. Chancellor’s “vision, leadership, and life-long contributions to technological advancements in agriculture.”  Presenting the award is Prof. David Slaughter, Director of SmartFarm at UC Davis and faculty in the department who remarked that Prof.

BAE undergraduate attends Harvard’s National Collegiate Research Conference

Undergraduate student Umayr Sufi won an invitation to the prestigious National Collegiate Research Conference, whose mission is building an interdisciplinary research community among undergraduate students, and promoting undergraduate research.

The Harvard College Undergraduate Research Association (HCURA) selected Umayr to attend the 2017 National Collegiate Research Conference (NCRC) held Thursday January 19 through Saturday January 21, 2017 at Harvard University.

BAE Chair and Professor Bryan Jenkins elected an ASABE Fellow

A huge congratulations goes out to Dr. Bryan Jenkins, who was recently selected by the M-131 Fellow committee and elected by the ASABE Board of Trustees to the Grade of ASABE Fellow!

This is an honorary status to which members of distinction of the American Society for Agricultural and Biological Engineers must be elected.  This action reflects the high regard that awardees are held by members of the Society.  It also recognizes the significant contributions they have made to the profession.

Associate Professor Tina Jeoh selected as a Chancellor’s Fellow
