The State of California, through the University of California Office of the President, has granted $1 million for the Aggie Climate Action for Equity (ACE) initiative to enable the transition of early-stage climate-based projects to the next phase of tangible development.
A dozen early-career faculty members at UC Davis have been named to this year's Hellman Fellowship, a program to help propel their work to the next level. One faculty member selected is Shamim Ahamed, an assistant professor of biological and agricultural engineering.

Biological systems engineering graduate student Mia Gaiero teamed up with food science and technology graduate student Truc Pham to dive deep into algae for the inaugural AlgaePrize Competition, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy Bioenergy Technologies Office. The two earned a place among the top finalists, as well as $10,000 and the best poster award at an awards ceremony in April.
The Farm Robotics Challenge is a national competition for students to create automated solutions to issues farmers face during production. One UC Davis team took the top prize.
In recognition of his outstanding service to the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATCC), Biological and Agricultural Engineering Professor Gang Sun has been selected as the 2021 recipient of the Harold C. Chapin Award for his dedicated service and outstanding leadership.
Sun “exceedingly exemplifies the outstanding leadership and dedicated service and outreach as evidenced by his work in the past 27 years,” said the association.
UC Davis Safety Service's annual Lab Safety Awards are part of campus' commitment to recognizing labs with a strong safety emphasis who are doing their part to think safe, act safe and be safe. This year's winner for College of Engineering is Jesus Dionisio Fernandez-Bayo's lab in the BAE department.
Biological and Agricultural Engineering (BAE) Professor Tina Jeoh received the 2021 Danisco Foundation Science Excellence Medal from International Flavors and Fragrances, Inc (IFF). Every year, the award recognizes one scientist for their scientific and operational excellence and a remarkable track record of accomplishments in research and collaboration with industry.
The ASABE major award recognizes excellence in microirrigation research, development, extension, education and/or industry. Microirrigation is a low-pressure, low-flow-rate type of irrigation that can reduce the likelihood of overwatering a landscape. Kisekka’s group is known for its work in precision irrigation.
