Biological systems engineering M.S. student Ivan Wongso has earned first place for his research presentation at the 2021 Food Improved by Research, Science, and Technology (FIRST) event, held by the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) during its annual meeting. He won over three other finalists under the Quality Management Division.
UC Davis biological systems engineers Chang Chen and Ke Wang placed first and third, respectively, in the 2021 graduate student paper competition hosted by the Association of Overseas Chinese Agricultural, Biological and Food Engineers (AOCABFE, also known as AOC). The competition is held every year at the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) Annual Meeting.
On March 18, the UC Davis Healthy Soils Project hosted a virtual field day focused on producing and applying compost products from almond and dairy waste. The UC Davis Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering (BAE) mourns the loss of professor emeritus Tom Rumsey. Rumsey is remembered as a world-class researcher, a dedicated teacher and a family man who made his mark on the community through his kind, patient and generous ways.
When Wayne Low Kum graduates this spring with a B.S. in biological systems engineering and a minor in psychology, it will mark the end of a journey over 20 years in the making. Wayne started at UC Davis as a first-year student in the late 1990s, but returned to school in 2020 to finish his degree after dropping out his senior year.
“It’s never too late to learn or to go back to school, and when an opportunity like this presents itself, you can’t be scared,” he said. “There’s no shame in learning.”
Biological and agricultural engineering professor Fadi Fathallah was recognized by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) with the SMV Technologies Ergonomics, Safety, and Health award for his contributions to promote agricultural safety and health.
Nisha Marwaha completed both her undergraduate and graduate degrees at UC Davis' College of Engineering, working with the UC Davis Student Farm and the UC Davis SCOPE Project, on campus, as well as UC Davis Engineers Without Borders in Peru, along the way.
