Work in the Safe Ag Lab at UC Davis

The University of California, Davis is seeking a graduate (M.S. or Ph.D.) student to research in the Safe Ag Lab. The primary project focus will be on the agricultural vehicle tracking and rollover detection device.

Required Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a B.S. or higher degree in Agricultural Engineering, Biosystems Engineering, Biological Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or closely related fields; should have strong written and oral English skills; will be willing to work with a diverse group of faculty, staff, and students to conduct lab research and the desire for fieldwork. Additional highly desirable qualifications that applicants can address in the statement of purpose include strong organizational skills, ability, and self-motivation to work independently while accomplishing high-quality tasks in a timely fashion. Application/Software Design Patterns, MVC Architecture, Concurrency and Closures, Protocol Oriented Programming, REST/HTTP Architecture, Experience with API integration, Bluetooth Low Energy protocol, Database design and management, Core Apple Libraries (CoreBluetooth, CoreLocation, MapKit, UIKit), 3rd Party Libraries (Alamofire, OAuthSwift, Firebase), Embedded software development, Object-oriented design, Concurrent/parallel programming, Familiarity with object-relational mapping (ORM), Cloud Architecture (Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure), Sensor fusion algorithm development, Familiarity with circuit diagrams.

Programming Languages

Python 3, C++, Swift, NodeJS, TypeScript (JavaScript), and SQL

Hardware communication protocols

Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI), Inter-Integrated Circuit (I2C), and Universal Asynchronous Receiver-Transmitter (UART)

Software

Git (or another version control application like SVN, CVS, or Mercurial), SQLite3, Linux, SSH, Real-time operating system (RTOS) experience would be a plus, MacOS and Xcode

Screening of applicants will begin immediately and continue until filled. Applicants may have the opportunity to undertake spring and summer hourly employment prior to Fall 2021-quarter enrollment.
