Dr. Shrini Upadhyaya’s research publicized

Professor Upadhyaya’s water stress sensor for vineyards and orchards recently garnered attention from the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, as well as the Davis Enterprise and Phys.org.  The sensor attaches to a single leaf to measure temperature, light, wind and humidity to help optimize plant irrigation.

BAE Faculty win EurAgEng Outstanding Paper award

Congratulations to professors David Slaughter and Fadi Fatallah, whose paper “Co-robotic intra-row weed control system” has won the Biosystems Engineering Outstanding Paper Adward. This was presented at the EurAgEng Assembly yesterday in Aahrus University (Denmark).

The paper was co-authored by Manuel Pérez-Ruíza, David C. Slaughter, Fadi A. Fathallah, Chris J. Gliever and Brandon J. Miller.  It  appeared in Biosystems Engineering, Vllume 126, October 2014.

 

Assistant Professor Gail Bornhorst awarded fellowship for mentoring

Dr. Gail Bornhorst was one of five 2015-16 Mentoring at Critical Transitions Fellowship awardees, which are presented by the School of Graduate Studies.  Her project, titled Enhancing teaching and presentation skills using microteaching principles, and her graduate student mentees, Yamile Mennah, Sarah O’Meara and Krista Drechsler, are featured on the graduate school webpage.

Professor Emeritus Paul Singh awarded honorary degree from University of Guelph

The Senate of the University of Guelph approved a recommendation that Dr. Singh be awarded degree of Doctor of Science, honoris causa.

In his award letter, they explained that this degree is awarded in recognition of his outstanding contributions to research in agricultural and food science, and his global dissemination of food processing knowledge and technologies.  It went on to say that his leadership and innovative approaches to sharing have significantly advanced the field of food science and technology around the world.

BAE welcomes new CE Specialst, Dr. Irwin Donis-Gonzalez

Dr. Irwin Donis-González’s passion for agriculture and postharvest technologies began 10 years ago in his native Guatemala, working as an independent agro consultant upon earning his Bachelor’s and Licentiate degree in Agricultural Engineering from the Del Valle University of Guatemala.

Professor David Slaughter named ASABE Fellow

At the annual meeting of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers in July, Dr. David Slaughter was named a Fellow of the organization for his outstanding contributions to agricultural automation and development of sensing technologies for agricultural product quality and precision agriculture.

Dr. Jean VanderGheynst appointed interim dean of the College of Engineering

On June 9th Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi announced the appointment of Professor Jean VanderGheynst as interim dean for the College of Engineering, effective July 1. VanderGheynst served as the associate dean for Undergraduate Studies from 2009 to 2013, and since then has been the associate dean for Research and Graduate Studies. VanderGheynst replaces outgoing dean Enrique Lavernia on the day he becomes provost and executive vice chancellor at UC Irvine. She will serve until a permanent dean takes up the post. Finalists for the permanent position recently visited campus and the recruitment process is ongoing.

Nitin lab receives large grant as UC Davis Heads USDA Food Safety Project

A collaborative food-safety project headed by UC Davis has been selected for funding by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The proposal, titled “An Integrated Approach to Eliminate Cross-Contamination During Washing, Conveying, Handling and Packaging of Fresh Produce,” will receive $4.751 million over the course of five years.

Professor David Slaughter named Fellow of ASABE

BAE’s Dr. Slaughter has been selected as one of twelve ASABE Fellows for 2015.  This is an honorary status to which members of distinction may not apply but must be elected. This action reflects the high regard he is held by members of the Society. It also recognizes the significant contributions he has made.
